Open Your Eyes & Ears to
Human Rights Issues
After this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify places where they might learn more about human rights and becoming a defender
- Identify model defenders of human rights
As a means of building students’ readiness for the development of their own campaigns, this lesson focuses students’ attention on existing public awareness messages and campaigns, and the issues they address. These will serve as models for the projects they are about to begin.

Common Core State Standards:
- Share an anecdote about your growing awareness of human rights issues in your neighborhoods, your country, and/or the world. This awareness begins and grows when we open our eyes and ears to information that is all around us.
- Share instances in your own life where you might look for and find people and projects focused on being a human rights defender.
- In groups, students will begin brainstorming people and places that might offer information about issues related to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
- Some things for students to open their eyes to: public service announcements (PSAs) on TV; film trailers; benefit concerts and events; celebrity causes; editorials; fundraisers; church/ synagogue announcements; interviews with friends and family; world news on TV, in print and online; church group projects; documentaries; efforts of local organizations; boy/girl scout projects; service groups within your school.
- Students collect a list of places where they have found problems with human rights, and projects aimed at making them better. They will add to the list what they know about the issue, what is being done about it, and what they can do to help.
- Groups share their lists with the class, generating one shared list to be displayed in the classroom for inspiration.
